Interactive maps now online

Interactive maps are now available which explore four of The Simons Foundation’s primary areas of focus: Nuclear Disarmament, Genocide Prevention, Space Security, and Arctic Security.

The Nuclear Disarmament map contains information on what we deem to be the legal, political and practical steps that need to be taken in order to achieve the goal of complete nuclear disarmament – zero nuclear weapons.

The map on Genocide provides information on historical cases of genocide and those regions currently at risk of mass atrocities, as well as present-day issues related to genocide and the prevention of genocide.

Space Security is broadly defined as the secure and sustainable access to, and use of, space and freedom from space-based threats and our map provides information on key indicators of space security, specific events that have had an impact on the sustainability of outer space, and efforts to build a robust normative framework for space activities.

In addition to the more familiar security concerns of territorial disputes between Arctic states, our map on Arctic Security outlines broader issues of concern with regard to security in this region including nuclear issues, environmental security concerns such as hazardous waste sites, and resource deposits that may potentially lead to greater tensions between Arctic states in the future.

John Burroughs, Fellow at The Simons Foundation and Executive Director of Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Disarmament, was responsible for the development of the information for the nuclear disarmament map. Ryan Cronsberry, Master's Candidate in History at Concordia University, and Prof. Frank Chalk, Peace Leader at The Simons Foundation and founding Co-Director of the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS) at Concordia University, provided the information related to genocide. Cesar Jaramillo, Project Manager of the Space Security Index and Program Officer at Project Ploughshares, prepared the information available on the Space Security map. Leanne Smythe, Doctoral Candidate in Political Science at UBC, provided the information on the map about Arctic Security. The maps will be continually updated and revised to reflect changes and new information as it becomes available.
