“Beyond International Humanitarian Law" 2013 NPT PrepCom side event

On April 22, 2013, The Simons Foundation, Lawyers Committee for Nuclear Policy, and the Abolition 2000 Working Group on International Humanitarian Law convened the "Beyond International Humanitarian Law" side event during the 2013 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) PrepCom meeting at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

The session discussed the threat, deployment, posession, as well as use of nuclear weapons in light of human rights, the UN Charter, and the emerging concept of ecocide and implications for disarmament diplomacy.  Speakers included John Burroughs, Executive Director of Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy; Madeleine Rees, Secretary-General of Womens' International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF); and Paul Meyer, Senior Fellow at The Simons Foundation and Fellow in International Security, Simon Fraser University.  Rob van Riet of the World Future Council moderated the event.
