In 2002, The Simons Foundation and Project Ploughshares initiated, in partnership with Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT), the first of what has become an annual conference on space security at the United Nations Office in Geneva.  The Simons Foundation continues to sponsor the series of conferences organized by the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) to inform the UN Conference on Disarmament on the issue of space security, the peaceful uses of outer space and the prevention of an arms race in outer space.

The most recent conference, Space Security 2014: Implementation and Compliance, held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland on March 19 and 20, 2014, was organized by UNIDIR in collaboration with Secure World Foundation and The Simons Foundation, with support from the Governments of Canada, the People’s Republic of China, the Russian Federation and the United States of America.

Many important space security processes were concluded or passed key milestones last year and, as such, this was an opportune time to build discussion on the direction of the international community in developing further space security instruments. The conference aimed to provide an overview of current initiatives, an update on the implementation and adherence to existing instruments, and a view of the way ahead.

See the following link for remarks made by The Simons Foundation's Senior Fellow, Amb (Ret'd) Paul Meyer, on "Space Security and Diplomatic Disconnects: A Canadian Perspective."

Additional information on the conference, including the agenda, other presentations, and audio of the introduction by UNIDIR's Director, Theresa Hichens, are available here on the UNIDIR website.
