2020 Recipients of the Simons Award in Nuclear Disarmament and Global Security

The Liu Institute for Global Issues in the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs at The University of British Columbia (UBC) offers this award to UBC students intending to undertake research on topics related to nuclear disarmament and global security.  The award is funded by an endowment provided by The Simons Foundation Canada.

Students selected will produce a research paper. They will also be expected to attend any seminars, workshops and other activities related to nuclear disarmament and global security organized by the Liu Institute for Global Issues or the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs. Upon satisfactory production of the paper, undergraduate and graduate students will receive awards of $1,000 and $1,500 respectively.

Five UBC students have been selected by the Liu Institute for Global Issues in the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs to receive a Simons Award in Nuclear Disarmament and Global Security for 2020.

The selected students and their research proposals span a range of backgrounds and areas of interest:

  • Andrei Golobokov, Masters student in Political Science, Power engagement and states’ accommodation: The case of the six-party talks
     
  • Easton Smith, MPPGA student, Policy responses to emerging biosecurity risks
     
  • Edwin Edou, MPPGA student, Assessing the prospects for nuclear power in Kenya
     
  • Jessika Woroniak, MPPGA student, Health and environmental consequences of uranium mining and the nuclear fuel cycle
     
  • Zainab Rauf, Undergraduate student majoring in International Economics, Economics of India’s Prototype Fast Breeder nuclear reactor
