The UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA) and the Department of Political Science will be hosting Lloyd Axworthy on October 21st, 5:30-7:00pm for a conversation on his recently-published memoir, Lloyd Axworthy: My Life in Politics (2024, Sutherland House Books).

We have the honour of welcoming him back to the Liu Institute for Global Issues, where he served as Director from 2000-2004. We invite past affiliates of the Liu Institute, colleagues, and friends (and plus one’s!) who have worked with Lloyd over the years to join us.

Lloyd Axworthy was a Member of Parliament for 21 years and served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1995 to 2000. He was then President of the University of Winnipeg for ten years. In December 2015, he was promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada. He now chairs the World Refugee and Migration Council.

In this stirring and beautifully written memoir, Lloyd Axworthy tells the unlikely story of a Canadian prairie boy raised in the Social Gospel tradition becoming a prominent force in both national and international politics. With extraordinary candour and introspection, he invites readers inside his roles in some of the most important political stories of the last half century, including the enactment of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the great debate over the Canada-US free trade agreement, and the global fights to ban landmines and establish the International Criminal Court.
