Among his many important roles and accomplishments, Amb. Dhanapala received The Simons Foundation Award for Distinguished Global Leadership in the Service of Peace and Disarmament for his contribution to nuclear disarmament, particularly as Chair of the 1995 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Conference, and also served as the 2008 Simons Visiting Chair in International Law and Human Security, School for International Studies at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver.

Amb. (ret) Jayantha Dhanapala served as Sri Lanka's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva and as Ambassador to the United States, Director of the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), Under Secretary General of the United Nations for Disarmament Affairs, President of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, Vice President of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), and was one of The Simons Foundation Canada's Peace Leaders.
