Click here for the statement by Derek Johnson, chief executive officer of the international Global Zero movement for the elimination of nuclear weapons, in response to President Joe Biden's offer to President Vladimir Putin of a full five-year extension of the last remaining nuclear arms control agreement between Russia and the United States. The New START treaty, which limits both countries to no more than 1,550 strategic offensively deployed nuclear weapons each, will expire February 5, 2021 without mutual agreement to extend.

A total of four awards of CAD $5,000 are available to Canadian Master’s and/or Doctoral candidates to support the independent research and writing of an academic paper responding to a specific Non-Proliferation, Arms Control and Disarmament (NACD) topic. Awards also include domestic travel support to Ottawa where successful candidates will present their completed papers during a special event at Global Affairs Canada Headquarters. Five UBC students have been selected by the Liu Institute for Global Issues in the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs to receive the Simons Award in Nuclear Disarmament and Global Security for 2020. The award is funded by an endowment provided by The Simons Foundation Canada.
