The Simons Foundation Canada in the news

See CNN for their January 21st article on "The great race for the Arctic: Why Russia, China and the US all have it in their sights" which cites The Simons Foundation Canada's 2024 report "Military Footprints in the Arctic" by Ernie Regehr for information on Arctic military installations and activities.

Excerpt:

"Russia and NATO both push for an Arctic military presence
The Arctic is home to more than 60 major military sites, with hundreds more defense installations within the broader region, according to the Simons Foundation, a Canadian non-profit focusing on Arctic security. Russia has at least 30 arctic military installations and has invested heavily in its nuclear-powered submarine fleet, the backbone of its military power in the Arctic."

The report identifies 69 continuously staffed Arctic military sites in the five states with Arctic Ocean coastlines and discusses the challenges of reducing strategic tensions and recovering diplomacy. As Canada’s first northern indigenous Governor General, Mary Simon, has reminded all Arctic states, there is a need “to figure out how [they] can continue working together when a terrible war is going on [which is] contradictory to the rules-based international order.”
